The 2003 United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) report "Not a Minute More: Ending Violence Against Women" estimates that one in three women around the world will be raped, beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused during their lifetime. According to Human Rights Watch, global abuses against women are relentless, systematic, and widely tolerated if not explicitly condoned. Violence against women has been called a global social epidemic. In the face of the magnitude and complexity of the problem, it would be easy to feel hopeless. What engenders hope, however, is to learn about the inspired work that is being done all around the world and to recognize that significant reforms are occurring because of grassroots local and international efforts.

Open to all interested women and men, this conference will bring together students, teachers, professionals, and grassroots activists interested in the issue of violence against women and children. International guest participants will share their experiences. The conference will be informative and inspirational for all-those who provide direct support for victims of violence, organize communities around the issue of violence, conduct research and advocate for policy reform, or who simply want to know how their everyday actions can contribute to a world in which women are not targets of violence. The conference will look at personal violence against women using a global feminist lens and will "connect the dots" so that participants can see how such violence interrelates with institutional violence, sexual objectification, a denial of access to health care or educational opportunities, economic oppression, environmental violence and war. One key component of this conference is to get to know each other better and gain a deeper understanding of our commonalities as women so that we will gain an increased sense of solidarity, and the ability to connect across borders to share ideas and support for each others' work.
